Artist's Statement
Nur Aqilah Johari has always been interested in questioning the notion of identity in today's socio-political society. Constantly using herself as a guinea pig and subject as a resultant of current society's influences. Therefore, most of her works involve critical view of social, cultural and political issues through investigation and documentation. Currently, she is still under an ongoing work which she will be examining the effects of 'race' as a permanent label and fragmentation of one's identity.
Aqilah's choice of medium is versatile. Although she used to be a major in painting and has worked with different experimentation of conventional materials, Aqilah has profound interest in digital media such as sound and video installations. Via these multi-dimensional works, viewers are provoked to question themselves and reflect their social positions in the contemporaneous civilisation.
Aqilah Johari is currently pursuing a Bachelor in Fine Arts at Lasalle College of the Arts.
